Beads have been made in Bohemia since Roman times but it wasn't until the early 1900s that interlocking beads began to be manufactured.
In an effort to expand their market beyond their borders, Czech bead makers employed 'sample men' who traveled from country to country asking people what kind of beads they wanted. They returned to Bohemia with sketches and descriptions of these beads and production increased as the demand for beads grew.
Of these, bone shaped beads are believed to bring good luck and were produced in various forms with the most intricate of these being interlocking beads.
