This year's Victoria's Secret fashion show has by most accounts created more buzz than year's past. For starters, fashion and social media it girls Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid walked the show for the first time alongside long time angels Alessandra Ambrosio, Adriana Lima, Candace Swanepoel and Lily Aldridge.
Secondly, Rihanna scheduled to reprise her performance at the show since killing it in 2012 with the debut of her aptly titled track 'Phresh off the Runway', cancelled at the last minute. Her stated excuse was the need to focus on finishing her long awaited album 'R8' but rumor has it she was upset that her friend and super model Jourdan Dunn was not asked to walk the show, allegedly dropped in favor of Kendall Jenner.
All this pales however to the biggest surprise of them all, Angolan model Maria Borges strutting down the runway in her natural close cropped hair, starkly juxtaposed against the long tousled waves worn by all the other models. While Maria has walked the show in the past, this was the first time she or any other model has walked the show 'au naturel', making a statement that beauty exists in more than just one form.
In an era when many women, especially those in the public eye, don't feel attractive without wearing hair extensions or wigs, I applaud her for rocking her natural hair and looking stunning while doing so. I've worn this style of hair in the past myself, but gave it up because I found the styling options too limited. Sometimes, you just want to throw your hair up in a bun or wear soft waves framing your face. However, I know without a shadow of doubt that I'll return to this look when my lifestyle changes because nothing beats rolling out of bed in the morning with your hair already done.
