The Maasai [which means people speaking Maa] people of northern Tanzania and southern Kenya are arguably one of the most well known people of Africa due to their distinctive way of dress and warrior jumping dance during the coming of age ceremony.

Semi-nomadic, they live along the arid and semi-arid land of the Great Rift Valley, heading cattle for sustenance, and are one of the few African people who still maintain most of their traditions.

In Maasai tradition, the only way for a young boy to achieve warrior status was to single-handedly kill a lion with his spear.

However, due to the declining lion population, would be warriors are now encouraged to hunt lions in groups.

Not to be outdone, the Maasai women have a long history of bead working, evolving from using clay, ivory and shells among others as raw materials, to using brightly colored glass beads since the late nineteenth century.
